The First Steps

What do I do when a death occurs?

The first step is to select a funeral home and let them know where the death has taken place. They will arrange for your loved one to be transferred into their care. To reach Edson Funeral Home, call 1-800-238-3462 at any hour. We will then set up an arrangement time that works best for your family.

When I call, will someone come right away?

If you request immediate assistance, yes. If the family wishes to spend a short time with their loved one to say goodbye, that’s perfectly acceptable. Your funeral director will come when your time is right, keeping travel time in mind.

What We Will Ask You

At the arrangement meeting, your funeral director will need the following details about your loved one to register the death with Vital Statistics.

Their full legal name
Usual residence
Name of their spouse
Their occupation, before retirement
Their birthdate
Their birthplace
Name of their father
Father’s birthplace
Name of their mother (maiden name)
Mother’s birthplace
Their Social Insurance Number
Their Alberta Health Care Number

Decisions to Consider

Your funeral director will guide you through each of these. It can help to think about them before you meet with us.

Obituary

We can submit newspaper obituaries at your family’s request, and post the obituary on our website.

Disposition

Please consider whether you would like to proceed with cremation or burial.

Viewing

Discuss whether you would like a viewing, and select the clothing you would like your loved one dressed in. We will also ask for permission to proceed with embalming, if applicable.

Service

The location, preferred date and time, clergy or officiant (we have individuals within our funeral home who can officiate), eulogy speaker, personal tributes, hymns and music (usually about three selections), a slideshow or photo tribute (which we can prepare), memorabilia, pallbearers, cemetery, reception location, caterer and menu.
