It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of Laura Kathleen Roper on June 5, 2026, at the age of 71.
Born August 5, 1954, in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, Laura spent her childhood in Crystal Beach, Ontario, before moving west to Jasper, Alberta. There, she built a life, raised her children, and worked for many years. She eventually settled in Hinton, Alberta, for her retirement.
An incredibly smart and talented woman, Laura possessed a sharp mind. She was a master of words, frequently outsmarting anyone brave enough to challenge her to a game of Scrabble, and no crossword puzzle could stump her.
Laura appreciated the simple pleasures of life. She loved nothing more than a hot summer day, unwinding with a few drinks, and putting on her favorite music to fill the house.
She brought the same relaxed approach to the kitchen, where she could use whatever was on hand to whip up a memorably delicious meal. She didn't need a fancy recipe to make people feel welcome, just good food, good tunes, and witty conversation.
Laura’s greatest legacy is her family. She is survived by her children, Lyla Mozel (Dave) and Tyson Syrja (Sherri), and her lifelong friend and co-parent, Wayne Syrja. She was the deeply proud grandmother of Sterling Mozel, Kingston Mozel, and Rylan Syrja.
She also leaves behind her siblings, Linda Austin, Lila Czerny, Bob Roper, Lee Roper, Tom Roper, and Lisa Roper along with a large circle of extended family and friends who loved her dearly. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Doreen.
A celebration of Laura's life will be held in Jasper on June 30, 2026. Details to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of one's choice in Laura’s honor.
