With great sadness and so much love, we say goodbye to our beautiful mother, LaVera Tiedemann, who passed away peacefully on Monday, February 16, 2026. She was 95 years old. Her final months were spent in the Mayerthorpe ExtendiCare – a truly remarkable place.
LaVera Mae Shultz was born on May 18, 1930, to Leonard Shultz and Lydia Kroening, in Lamont, Alberta, the eldest of three children. Her childhood was spent in Bruderheim and Fort Saskatchewan in Alberta. After completing high school, she hitch-hiked to the General Hospital in Edmonton, where she completed her training as a registered nurse. She thrived as a nurse and took great pride in her work, receiving awards for her dedication. She eventually retired at 73 years old.
She married Lawrence Tiedemann on August 13, 1955. Together they raised seven children, moving multiple times throughout central Alberta. After their divorce, LaVera moved with her youngest three daughters to Vancouver Island. She spent 3 ½ years in Hawaii and travelled to India before returning to Vancouver Island where she lived until 2021. Needing more family support, she moved with Cecilia back to Edson, Alberta.
LaVera loved to sing, she sang through high school and throughout our lives as she raised her seven children. Right up to a few days before her passing, she woke up singing every morning. It was her love language. Now she is singing with the angels. She often said, “Love is the most important thing. It’s all about love.”
She was predeceased by her ex-husband, her father and mother and her brother Jeff.
She is survived by her sister Bonnita and her own children and their families:
Christopher, his wife Janette and daughters Jacqueline (Rene) and Kristen (Mark);
Lawreen (John) and their children Benjamin (Colleen), Nicholas, Juniper (Chad), Emily (Lucas), Katherine and Carl Isaac (Selina);
Gregory and his children Andrew and Courtenay;
Michael, his wife Susie and their children Alex (Samantha), Jennine, David (Lisa), Jory (Halee) and Michael;
Juanita and her children Raelynn and Jesse (Melaina);
Bonnita, her husband Michael and their children Adam (Jessie), Megan (Matthew), Tieken (Rachael) and Mackenzie;
and Cecilia.
She also has 10 great grandchildren: Ellie, Tavin, Daxton, Malece, Koen, Ivy, Harrison, Theodore, Ryker and Abigail as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Her wish was to have her body cremated. There will be two Celebrations of Life at a later time – one in Edson, Alberta, and one on Vancouver Island.
The Edson Funeral Home is overseeing arrangements. You may call Lawreen at (780) 712-0163 if you would like more information.
