Gabrielle, affectionately known as Googs, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Dec 11, 2025. Born in Jasper to Isabel and Otto Morin in 1931, she spent almost all her entire life in the beautiful mountain town of Jasper. She was predeceased by her loving husband John Jacob Koebel in 2018 and by her brother Jean Morin.
Googs will be lovingly remembered by her family Sam (Shelley) and Ainsley, Nicole (Rupert), Tamara, Joshua and Isabel (Steve), and Michael (Alison) Jena, Myles and Dylan and sister Antoinette Kinnear. She also leaves to mourn her nephews Jimmy (Christina) and Seumas and her friend Quinto and many cherished friends.
Googs loved the mountains, spending her days skiing, hiking, climbing, swimming and skating. She trained as a nurse and worked as the public health nurse with Dr. B. Later she met fellow adventurer, John Koebel, and married in 1961. Four children later, Googs continued her life of adventure with her family. Skiing Marmot, skating on frozen lakes, hiking in the mountains and many, many picnics. In the early seventies they bought “The Farm”, where Googs and John built many lasting family memories while raising cattle and growing a massive garden. Later years they traveled, spending time in the southern U.S. and Mexico and much time in Maui with Tamara and her family.
Even in her later years she was keen on adventure. She loved long drives looking at Jasper scenery, especially the wildflowers. Sam often took her in Dad’s TR3 convertible, wind in her hair and a big smile on her face. She loved flowers and was a talented artist continuing painting her whole life.
Googs was a second mother to many. The house was always full of laughter and others enjoying Googs wonderful stories, caring ear and delicious goodies.
Googs often said: “Life is short, make it sweet!” She lived those words every day.
We would like to thank the staff of Alpine Summit, the DAL, Homecare and the doctors that provided exceptional care to our beloved mother.
Please plant a tree, grow a garden, paint a picture, take a hike in the mountains or ski a fine line down the slopes in memory of Googs. A Celebration of Life will take place in early summer, outside, with a lovely picnic just how she always had hers.
