Richard (Soucy) Henault October 3, 1925 - December 7, 2013
On December 7th, 2013, Richard (Dick) Henault, formerly of Carrot Creek, AB, passed away peacefully, at the age of 88, at Pembina Village in Evansburg, AB. Leaving to celebrate his life are his children Theresa Wynn (Jerry) of Edmonton and Gerald (Lillianne) Henault of Carrot Creek, his grandchildren Michael Henault, Jason (Jessica) Henderson, Desiree (Gavin) Albert, Jeremiah (Chelsea) Henault, Alexandrea Voyageur, Dustin Henault and great granddaughters Charity and Esther Albert and Jaylyn Henderson. “Uncle Dick” will be missed by a multitude of nieces and nephews who have fond memories of spending time at Carrot Creek with him and their Auntie Helen. Richard was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Helen (nee Irwin), in 2011, his children Sharen (1961) and Rick (1987), his parents, Samuel and Claire Soucy, and twelve siblings. Richard and his parental family lived a challenging life. From a young age he developed remarkable skills and talents - hunting, fishing, and craftsmanship in almost every trade. He served for two years in the Canadian Armed Forces, most of it overseas, further developing his skills in marksmanship and munitions. After returning to Canada he went to work for his brother-in-law, Roy Hilsen, then for Oscar Svedberg, on saw mills at Carrot Creek. It was there, in 1947, that he met and fell in love with Helen Irwin. They were married in 1948. Richard worked in Mercoal in the mines then in Jasper Place with his brother Joe in stucco and plastering, eventually finding their way back to Carrot Creek. There they raised their family on Helen’s parental homestead with Richard farming, sawing lumber and doing whatever came his way. He was a community ‘go to guy’ if anything needed fixing. He saved pretty much everything because ‘it might come in handy,’ and it often did. Richard’s finely crafted electric guitars were legend. Richard left the farm only when failing health necessitated it. When his wife Helen passed, his heart, and his zest for life, went with her. The family sends gratitude to the nurses and staff at Sunshine Village and the Good Samaritan Pembina Village for their kind care over the past three years. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Richard’s life will be held at a later date.
