On Monday, June 22, 2015, Phyllis Velma Ruth Meier (Jones), surrounded by family, passed away peacefully at home and into the arms of Jesus her saviour.
Phyllis was born on November 23, 1925, in Exshaw, Alberta, to Arthur and Margaret Jones. She was predeceased by her loving husband Ben “her buddy”, on December 6, 2011, who she missed immensely. She was also predeceased by her three brothers, Harry, Rodney, and Jack, who she lovingly helped raise at the age of twelve, after the death of her own mother. This was the beginning of a life time full of care giving, nurturing, and “mothering” to literally everyone she met.
In 1942 mom volunteered for the Canadian Women’s Army Corps (CWAC), and was proud to serve her country. After marrying the love of her life, Ben, in 1945, they moved to Hinton in 1946, and spent the remainder of their lives loving and serving their community. Mom’s patriotic spirit led her to become a member of the Hinton Legion Ladies Auxiliary, where she spent many happy and hard working hours volunteering.
Mom loved her job at Switzer’s Drug Store, and she became well known for her radiant presence as she welcomed new people to the community and reminisced with “old-timers” who came and went to the store on a daily basis.
Four children had the profound privilege of being Ben and Phyllis’s daughters: Arlene (Wayne) Peterson of Edgerton, AB; Pat (Gordon) Grice of Castor, AB; Cindy (Allen) Sommerfeld of Hinton, AB; and Charlene (Gary) Sitar of Hinton, AB. Nana had a total of 11 grandchildren, 23 great grand children, and two great great grandchildren, all of whom were greatly influenced by her warmth, nurturing, generosity, commitment to family, and unconditional love of all people, no matter what their background. Her family always came first, and she was always there to turn to in times of need. She was our living example of a Proverbs 31 woman.
We love you Nana, and will miss you, but are so reassured to know that you are dancing and laughing once again, and that you are reunited with dad and the many, many friends who passed on before you; the reunion must have been wonderful! Thank you so much for showing us what commitment and love was all about. Your example has been passed on to all who knew you, and it was an honour to take care of you as you prepared for your final journey home.
Jesus spoke to his disciples in John 14:2-3 saying: “In my house are many rooms: if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”
At mom’s request, a funeral service will not be held, but contributions in mom’s name would be greatly appreciated to the Hinton Healthcare Foundation – Homecare Palliative Fund, the Hinton Food Bank, or the Hinton Pine Valley Senior Lodge Society.
