LOGAN, Mel Roy
With deep sadness, the family of Mel Logan of Hinton announces his passing on Thursday, May 3, 2012 in Hinton, AB, at the age of 75. Born on a farm outside Armley, SK, his family moved to Flin Flon, MB, when he was a young child, where he was raised until high school graduation. He married his childhood sweetheart Dolores on April 2, 1960 in Flin Flon. They subsequently raised their two children in Pine Point, NWT. Mel pursued a successful career in the construction and mining industries as a heavy duty mechanic and maintenance supervisor in Northern and Western Canada. He retired with Dolores to Hinton in 1994.
Mel is survived by his wife of 52 years, Dolores, his son Mark (Sandi) Logan and their children Katherine, Jessica and Kirsten of Spruce Grove, AB, his daughter Dawn (Steven) Wagner and their son Myles of Tumbler Ridge, BC, siblings Lorna (Howard) Dirks, Don (Charlene) Logan, Darlene Sheppard, Larry (Barb) Logan, Judy (Rob) Walker, numerous nieces, nephews and their families, and a host of friends.
Mel was predeceased by his father Roy, his mother Mary, his sister Shirley Skanderberg, and brothers-in-law Jon Skanderberg and Royden Sheppard.
Mel was heavily involved in every community of which he was a part. He served as Chief of the Pine Point, NWT Volunteer Fire Department for 15 years. Other organizations he was involved with included: Scouts Canada, square dancing, curling, flying, golf, bridge, and fly-tying clubs. As well, he was an avid pilot, fisherman, hunter, and outdoorsman. In recent years he assisted in the construction of the Beaver Boardwalk, acted as a spotter with the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association, and served in various capacities on the board of the Hinton Good Companions. He was available when anyone needed a hand with a project, large or small.
Mel was a devoted husband, loving father and doting grandfather. He was a caring and involved brother, uncle and friend. He will be remembered for his compassion, sense of humour and duty, story telling, listening ear, and helping hand.
His family was his passion, and he will be forever sadly missed.
A celebration of Mel’s life will be held at the Hinton United Church on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 2pm. There will be refreshments to follow at the Good Companions Hall.
Hinton Funeral Services entrusted with all arrangements. In lieu of other tributes, the family suggests that if desired, donations may be made to Hinton Palliative Care at 1280 Switzer Drive, Hinton, AB, T7V 1V2, or to a charity of your choice in memory of Mel Logan.
