On February 8th, 29015 Ian Shantz of Peers, Alberta passed away at the age of 77 years.

Left to mourn his loss and cherish his memory is loving wife and best friend Hilary, son Allan Robert (Anne) Shantz of Calgary and his son AJ and son Alex of Calgary, Alberta, and daughter Stephanie (Russell) Lapp of Calgary and their children Cohen, Spencer and Elliott, son Michael Shantz of Calgary, Alberta, Ian’s daughter Diana Welsh of Calgary and her daughter Nicole Antal, daughter Laurie (Steven) Chaplin of Langley, BC and children Erica and Terra and daughter Donna (Steven Johannes) Winger of Surrey, BC.

Also surviving are his siblings, Lulu (Edward) Chizek and family of Creston, BC, Edwin ( Anna) Shantz and family of Sayward, BC, Lea (Sarah) Shantz and family of Carrot Creek, Alberta, Herbert (Sandra) Shantz and family of Lac La Biche, Alberta, Mary Howland and family of Edson, AB and Allan (Susan) Shantz and family of Peers, Alberta.

There are numerous other relatives and a host of friends left to mourn.

Ian was predeceased by his son Patrick in infancy as well as his mother Jessie in 1998 and his father Allan in 1974.

Born in Carrot Creek, Ian left home to join the Canadian Army on 07 December 1955. He served as a Peacekeeper in Cairo, Cypress and Germany. He was posted in Cold Lake, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Calgary. Ian proudly belonged to the Queens Own Rifles of Canada. After he was honourably discharged from the Army on 22 May 1976 he worked for Corrections Canada as an instructor in Industries and Warehouse Assembly Coordinator (furniture building). Until retirement he worked in Edmonton, Mission, and Agassiz, BC. It was while Ian was working in Agassiz that he met and married Hilary. They chose to retire in Peers, AB to be near family and live in the country enjoying what nature offered. In retirement he continued to work with wood and created lovely handcrafted walking sticks and coat trees. Family and friends will miss his kind heart and beautiful smile.

Following cremation, a graveside service was held on Saturday, February 14th, 2015 at 2:30 PM at the Glenwood Cemetery with the Royal Canadian Legion Color Party in attendance.

In lieu of other tributes, donations if desired may be directed to the Cross Cancer Institute, c/o The Alberta Cancer Foundation, 11560 University Ave. Edmonton, Alberta T6G 1Z2 in memory of Ian Shantz.
