“Heaven Bound”
Dorothy Catherine Rocchio
(Dec. 20, 1919 – Aug. 25, 2016)
Mrs. Dorothy Catherine Rocchio a long time resident of Hinton, passed away on August 25, 2016 at the young age of 96 years. Dorothy was a Hintonite since 1957 and was so very fortunate to live out her life in her own home. She was admitted to the Hinton Hospital for the remaining three days of her wonderful full life when a sudden stroke left her in a peaceful painless state.
Dorothy was born to parents Lily and Thomas Olsen who immigrated from England to Castlegar, B.C. then to Nelson, BC. It was while in Nelson, BC that Dorothy and her younger sister Marjorie were born. When Dorothy was 2 years old, her father died and Dorothy, her Mother and sister travelled to England to be with family. When "Dot" was 12, her mother remarried Bert Shearman., a school master and Anglican Deacan and the family then immigrated back to Nelson, BC.
Dorothy loved books and excelled scholastically. She became an R.N. at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver. While stationed in Prince Rupert she met and married her soul mate Anthony (Tony) Rocchio. In 1957 the family moved from Edmonton to the booming pulp mill town of Hinton.
In 1964, Tony and Dorothy built and started Rocchio Electric Ltd. in the Hinton Valley which is located in the current Bakery site on Market Street. In 2003 our Dad (Papa to the Grandkids) died and mom once again persevered. Mom (Nana to the grand kids) attended the Anglican Church and was an Eastern Star member for over 25 years.
Mom was a warm, gentle, quiet, supportive lady who was always protective of family and of her independence. Mom's independence was challenged and lost however in Nov. 2014 when she fell and broke her hip. Wise and spiritually strong, she was the 'glue' that kept our family together. Her home was 'her castle' and a good cup of tea was her remedy for everything.
She often quoted poetry, liked to bake and could often be found enjoying a dark chocolate bar. She loved her family of pets, read her books, liked to knit and visit with family and friends.
"You raise me up"- her favourite hymn is so very fitting to celebrate her 'home coming' and reunion with Dad.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
A very special Thank-you to the doctors and the attentive, caring hospital staff and also to the kind and friendly Home Care ladies and of course to her always faithful friends.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter Cherry Catherine Rocchio; grand daughter Cheresa Marie Prusko, great grand kids: Chance, Addison and Meagan, grand daughter Shelanne Catherine Bulford (Sean), great grand kids: Logan, Lily and Griffin and by her daughter Diane Lynn Shone (Laurie) and grand daughter Nykala.
As an expression of sympathy and in loving memory of Dorothy, memorial contributions may be made to the Hinton S.P.C.A. at 209 Kelley Rd, Hinton, AB T7V 1H2.
Foothills Memorial Chapel, Hinton Funeral Services were entrusted with the care and funeral arrangements. 780.865.1234
