``Gone South to the Cabin``

On Saturday, October 20, 2012, Bertrand Lawrence Meropoulis of Foley Timber passed away at the Edson Healthcare Centre following a brief illness. He was predeceased by his father Louis, mother Pearl, his sisters Kathleen and Helen and brothers, William and Lyle. Bert is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife of 62 years, Irene, children Gregg (Patti), Brian (Andrea), Sherrill (Doug), Jeff and Michelle (Mike). Bert will be greatly missed by his grandchildren; Carli (Jason), Alexandra, Daniela, Clara, Matthew, Kao, Kyle, and two great grandchildren, Cash and Graye.

Born in Niton, during tough times, Bert learned from an early age that there was no substitute for hard work. Growing up, he was most at home when fishing or hunting with his uncles on their trap line. He was an accomplished road builder, logger, sawyer, and hunter. Bert was at his best when improvising repairs to equipment, autos, or household appliances. We often used the word ``McGyver`` to describe this trait. Dad developed a love for country music early in life, played at local dancehalls and his guitar was never far away at family gatherings.

Bert and Irene built a home and brought up their family in Niton Junction, before moving to a farm in Foley Timber. There they raised cattle, enjoyed country life and cheered on their favorite team, the Toronto Blue Jays. Bert built his dream cabin on his trap line at the edge of Eta Lake. There he spent afternoons watching geese, listening to the loons and evenings playing cards and swapping stories with his friends. Dad had an opinion on everything and he was quick to give it without apology. A big man with a kind heart and a wicked sense of humour… he will be sorely missed.

A celebration of Bert`s life took place on Friday, October 26th at 3:00 pm in the Niton Community Hall, officiated by Pastor George Stone. There will be a reception, followed by a ``Going Away Party`` for Bert.
