HUGHES, (Barney) Bernard
January 27th, 1928 – October 26th, 2013
With great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather on Saturday, October 26th, 2013, after a hard fought battle with father time.
Left to cherish Barney’s memory are his wonderful wife of 52 years, Mildred; three children, Ross (Dollie), Jill and Kim (Wayne); two grandchildren, Maxwell and Madeline; sister Jesse (Bill); brother Ron (Diba) and Ken.
Barney was predeceased by his parents, Bernard and Marie and sisters Dorothy and Marg.
Barney was born and raised in Calgary, AB. After completing his studies at U of A he taught at Mount Royal College in Calgary for three years before moving to Jasper in 1959 to teach at Jasper Junior/Senior High School. He has been working, raising a family, enjoying the outdoors, playing, loving, and laughing in Jasper ever since.
Barney will be remembered primarily for his love of family, always number one in his life. Barney’s passion in addition to family was working with kids of all ages. He loved to work with young people; to watch them grow into successful adults was a great source of satisfaction. Barney’s efforts, and mentorship enriched the lives of many of his students (and of course his own children, and grandchildren) over the years. Barney’s grandchildren, Max and Madeline (now in university in Calgary), always had an extra special relationship with their Grandfather. Grandpas’ sense of humour, love of a wide variety of sports, and eagerness to drop everything to spend time with his grandchildren will always be remembered and appreciated.
"A Celebration of Life Service" will be held for Barney with a date to be announced.
Special “Thank You” to Dr. Swanepoel, and medical staff at the Summit Lodge in Jasper for the fantastic care, consideration and expertise given to Barney and family during the final days shared with us.
