It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Syd Tilbury on Thursday, September 18, 2025.
Syd was born to Francis and Jesse Tilbury, April 16, 1942. Syd spent his childhood in Melita Manitoba. At age 17 he went on to serve five years in the Royal Canadian Navy 1957-1962.
Syd married Janet Thompson and had a son Kurt Tilbury in 1966 and a daughter, Kandis Tilbury in 1969. Syd completed his apprenticeship as an automotive mechanic in Calgary, Alberta, then moved his young family to Grande Cache, Alberta. He was the original owner of the Shell Service station, which he worked for 10 years. Syd remarried in the mid 70’s and lived the lifestyle, aligned with his great love of the outdoors, hunting and trapping. He also ran “Tilbury Outfitting”, which provided guided hunting trips into the mountains of Wilmore Wilderness, by pack horse. Syd built two log cabins and maintained a trapline in the Compton creek area, where he spent most of his time during the winters trapping.
Syd will be remembered as an unapologetically honest man and advocate for the environment and animals of the area. A man who could fix anything and a true outdoorsman, who made the beautiful town of Grande Cache his home for 56 years.
Syd was predeceased by his parents Jesse and Francis Tilbury and eldest sister Iris. Left to cherish his memory are his son Kurt(Natascha), daughter Kandis, grandchildren Ethan and Peyton Woodward; siblings Doug Tilbury (Shiela), Shirley Mcintosh (Dick) and their families.
Syd’s final resting place is in his hometown of Melita, Manitoba.
