Waldemir “Wally” Sawatzky

1930-2020

Mr. Waldemir “Wally” Sawatzky of Edson, AB., beloved husband of the late Irene Sawatzky, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at the age of 89 years.

Wally was born and raised in Winkler, Manitoba to Jacob and Susanna Sawatzky. He had 4 sisters: Margaret, Erna, Evelyn and Frieda; and 2 brothers: John and Leonard.

He worked as a mechanic from a young age. He met the love of his life – Irene – In 1948 and they were married November 2, 1950. They moved to Hamilton, Ontario and then back to Winkler, all the while increasing the size of their family. In 1956, they moved to Edson, where Wally wrote for his mechanics license and continued to work as a mechanic in 4 different garages over the next few years.

In September 1962, Wally started his dream job – driving school bus and mechanic for Trail Bus Service. He became a favourite driver amongst the students in this division! By the fall of 1964, the Sawatzky family was complete with 6 children. In 1982, Trail Bus sold and Wally went to work for the Yellowhead School Division #12 as their Master Mechanic until his retirement in 1996.

He will always be remembered for his outgoing personality and sense of humour. He loved to make others laugh! He leaves his family with great memories of his antics and games he played with them.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children Wanda (Pete) Haire, Rick (Dora) Sawatzky, Roy Sawatzky, and Tammy (Ken) Ramsay; 13 grandchildren Darren (Leanne), Tyler (Amy), David (Terrina), Elaine (Mark), Tyler D, Faline (Nat), Blake (Brittany), Vanessa, Brent (Allison), Lorissa (Tyler), Amber (Matthew), Andy (Lynsy), and Bailey; 19 great-grandchildren Spencer, Nolan, Abigail, Mackenzie, Talia, Autumn, Marley, Camren, Ashton, Trinity, Zackery, Owen, Landon, Eli, Layla, Dalton, Ryder, Brodie, and Sawyer; brother John (Justine); sisters Erna, Evelyn, and Frieda; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

Wally was predeceased by his loving wife Irene (2019); as well as his son Randy (1975) and daughter Joy (2008); parents Jacob and Susanna; and brother Leonard Sawatzky; and sister Margaret (George) Harder.

A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00pm on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at the Edson Royal Canadian Legion, 5016 – 5 Ave., Edson, AB.) with Pastor George Stone, officiating.
