"Stan" Gelmici Obituary

Stan Gelmici, 90, slipped away after a short illness in Edson, Alberta.  Pre-deceased by his wife Frances and son Gregory, Stan leaves behind children Sherridan, Lori (Larry Hanni), Jodi (Michael Abbott), Trenton (Olga), Stacey (Greg Saunders) and honorary daughters Blanca Pulido Garcia and Lisa White Chase.  Stan is also survived by his sister Eva, and his sister-in-law Shirley (George Avery) and brother in-law Bruce (Charlotte Winters).

He loved sharing ice cream with his many grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.  He greatly enjoyed the company of long-time friend Tien and caregivers Carmen and Marie.  Stan was proud of his people.

Lovingly known as “Papa”, he left this world a much better place having imparted his strong values, his ability to connect with anyone, and his gift of laughter. Papa grew up in the Coal Branch and established his life in Edson.  Following in his father’s footsteps, Papa grew the jewelry business in Edson and expanded his reach to real estate and the grocery business.  As an Edson pioneer, Papa nurtured a strong business network and the community.  His generosity was shown in his engagement with local groups through leadership development and direct support of their initiatives.

Papa’s obvious joy of life was spread to all.  Whether it be his pets who were given too many treats, his family and friends who heard the odd fishing tale, or those who approached him for help while chatting with him on the bench at the Edson post-office.  To his family and his community, Papa was an icon.

The family would like to thank Dr. Robinson and all health providers at the Edson Continuing Care Centre for the care provided to Papa over the years.

Please join us in the celebration of Papa’s life on Monday October 26, 2020 at 11:00 AM at the Bethel Pentecostal Church in Edson, Alberta.

COVID restrictions will be in place.
