It’s with the heaviest of hearts, we announce the passing of Paula Whelan. Paula passed away in Edson Hospital on August 2nd, 2025, with her family by her side. Paula was born in Jomala Finland on July2nd, 1950 to Martti Paavilainen and Anna Liisa Williams.
She immigrated to Canada with her siblings in her early years, ending up in Sault St. Marie Ontario. In Ontario she had her son Andy and fell in love with her soulmate Jim and married him February 7th, 1977. Paula Spent many of her years managing Mac’s Convenience stores, then started long haul trucking with Jim. Paula and Jim later moved to Barrhead, Alberta in the late 2000’s, where Paula became a beloved member of that community, working at the Campsie store for over 11 years.
Paula is lovingly survived by her son Andy Whelan and his wife Crystal. Her granddaughter’s Breanna (Mike), Danika and Kaydee. As well as her stepson George (Trina). Paula is also survived by her siblings Mirjam Rissanen (Matti), Markku Paavilainen (Jean), Pentti Paavilainen (Sandra) and Kaisa Manttari (Andy). As well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members, which Paula loved each and every one of them.
Paula is predeceased by her loving husband of 43 years, James (Jim) Whelan. Her parents Martti and Anna Liisa, her stepfather Sam Williams and her brother Mikael Bill Paavilainen.
Upon Paula’s request, there will be no service held and cremation will take place. We would like to thank the Edson Hospital and Staff for their continuous care over the years, as well as the Parkland Lodge and homecare staff for the care they provided for Paula.
