Olga Dowling Obituary

It is with profound sadness that the family of Olga Louise Dowling announces that she passed away peacefully at the age of 98 years. Olga was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Robert Wagner Dowling, in 2019. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Lori Dowling, Robert Dowling (Debbie) and her brother Roman as well as numerous family members and friends.

She was born in Northern Valley, Alberta, in 1926. At an early age she knew that she wanted to work in a hospital. Her deep caring nature led her to a career in nursing; she graduated as a RN from Lamont in 1949. She loved her work which took her to several hospitals in Alberta and British Columbia.

She married the love of her life, a pharmacist named Robert Wagner Dowling, in Vancouver in 1952. Together they worked in Sexsmith for a short time. She and Bob moved to Jasper, Alberta, in 1958, realizing their dream of owning and operating a drug store.

When both Lori and Robert were in elementary school, she became the Public Health Nurse in charge of the Jasper Health Unit.

From 1968 to 1980, while Bob was involved in politics, Olga took over the running of the family business. A task that she succeeded admirably at. She immersed herself into her family and Jasper activities. Volunteering with the Jasper Silver Blades, Minor Hockey and the Nurse’s Chapter. Enjoying everything that Jasper had to offer.

1980 to 1986 led her on adventures with Bob from Alberta 75 celebrations to Expo 86 in Vancouver. She also enjoyed spending time in Edmonton, volunteering with the Cross Cancer Institute.

From 1986-2004 she and Bob volunteered as CESO advisors, with projects in Northern Alberta, the Northwest Territories and Yukon, Northern Ireland, Czech Republic, Philippines, Romania, and the Ukraine.

She enjoyed wonderful world travels with her family and friends. She was also an outdoor enthusiast, an avid gardener, hiker, skier and golfer.

Olga truly saw the positive in every situation and the unique beauty in everyone she met. Although small in stature, she was mighty. She has given us, and all who knew her, a wonderful role model in life.  She has been an inspiration to be kind, generous, positive, honest and to stand up for what we believe. She taught us to keep moving and looking forward, no matter what stage of life we are in.

Thanks to the many friends who stayed in touch. Thanks to Alpine Summit, Homecare and the Staff at the Seton Jasper Hospital for the wonderful care. Thanks to the Bridge Club for never giving up on her!

At Olga’s request there will be no funeral. A Celebration of Olga’s Life will take place in Jasper at a later date.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made in Olga’s name to a charity of their choice.
