Merlyn Lawrence Obituary

Merlyn Dean Lawrence passed away peacefully at Edson Continuing Care Centre on Tuesday January 23, 2024, at the age of 88.

Merlyn was born November 6, 1935, and was commonly referred to as the baby born on a train somewhere between East Coulee and Drumheller, Alberta. He was the tenth of eleven children born to James and Pearl. Merlyn started as a savvy businessman at the age of six, delivering milk to his neighborhood customers and working the family farm. He dabbled in a little bit of everything from working on the railroad, building roads in the Yukon, and hauling pipe and service rigs across Alberta, before being hired by the City of Edmonton in 1956, where he retired after 30 years of service as a firefighter. In 1968, Merlyn started his own company called Olympic Pool Service. His friends joked that he went out with a tank of fuel and 500 business cards to start his business, but that business proved to treat him very well over the years.

Merlyn had many loves including big trucks, trains, and dancing. He made friends easily and was especially grateful for his lifelong friendship with Sine Chadi and Robert Croft. In his retirement, he made many friends at Ironwood Lodge, Parkland Lodge, Pine Valley Lodge and Edson Long Term Care. He especially enjoyed his frequent visits with Olivia, Ava and Levi and their beloved dog Lola.

Merlyn was predeceased by his parents, James and Pearl, siblings Ural, Florence, Hershal, Marshall, Phyllis, Laura-Jean, Hester, and James, niece Shirley, nephews Raymond, Scott, Jonathan, Benjamin, and numerous friends he made along his journey. Merlyn is survived by his brother Bill (Leslie), sister Shirley (Bucky), daughter Anita (Clayton), grandchildren Lily Anna, Travis (Robyn), Jordan (Chelsea), great grandchildren Nicholas, Annabelle, Hudson, Sawyer, and Lincoln, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Merlyn was especially fond of and is survived by his nephews Jack (Charlotte) and Jason, niece Carla (Dennis), children Olivia, Ava, and Levi, who ensured Merlyn was comfortable, happy, and receiving exceptional care in his final years.
