Margaret Gagnon Obituary

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Margaret Ann (Houle) Gagnon in Edson, AB on October 14, 2022, at the age of 70. She was a dearly loved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend to many.

Margaret was born in 1952 in Edson, Alberta and was the youngest of her five siblings, Lawrence, Marion, Marge, Leslie and John. Margaret, who was affectionately called “Honey” by her siblings, grew up in Edson. In 1968, her eldest child, Denise, was born. A few short years later, Margaret met the man she would spend the next 50 years with, Réjean (Reg) Gagnon. They were married on May 20, 1972. Two sons came from the marriage, Roger (1975) and Jean-Yves (1977), before the family moved to Whitecourt, AB. Together Margaret and Reg owned and operated Gagnon and Sons Logging for many years. Towards the end of their working career, they shifted gears and were quite successful in the pizza business. In retirement, they spent several summers at their lake lot in Faust, AB where they loved to go fishing on their pontoon boat, enjoyed regular fish-fries and enjoyed the company of many people who became great friends. Their campfire became a nightly gathering place.

Margaret was a caring and attentive Grandma. She would play cards and other table games with the older grandchildren and read books or watch movies with the younger ones. She was an avid reader and was always crocheting one of dozens of blankets for those she loved. She always made time to be a part of her grandchildren’s lives. She also held a special place in her heart for her beloved Chico.

Margaret will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Denise (Richard) Briand; sons, Roger (Amber) Gagnon and Jean-Yves (Shanna) Gagnon; her nine grandchildren, Arielle, Stephane, Mekayla, Logan, Liam, Tyce, Dylan, Koen and Kylie; as well as her brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, and long-time friends. She was predeceased by the love of her life, Réjean Gagnon, parents John and Lucy Houle and brother Lawrence “Sonny” Houle.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. Joseph Parish, 5538 Mink Creek Road, Whitecourt, AB, on October 25, 2022 at 1:00 pm.

The family would like to thank the incredible nurses, doctors and staff at the Edson Continuing Care Center for their care and support. The family would also like to thank the Edson Funeral Home for their professional, compassionate assistance.
