It is with heavy hearts that the family of Lois Beatrice Hellekson announces her passing on October 19th, 2025, at her residence in Continuing Care, Hinton, Alberta, with her family by her side.
Lois was born on July 31st, 1931, in Kelowna, British Columbia. In 1957, Lois and her daughter Sandra ventured to Alberta, and two years later, she settled in the Peers area, where she made her home in 1959.
For the next 66 years, Lois was privileged to be surrounded and supported by the most amazing friends, neighbours, and employers anyone could hope for through both good and challenging times.
Lois was a woman of many talents and interests. She loved to sing and dance, enjoyed curling and fishing, and was known for her baking, cooking, canning, gardening, woodwork and sewing. Lois delighted in reading, camping, picking berries, listening to old country music, visiting, and cheering for the Bluejays. Her quick wit and sharp mind made her a natural at games like Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, and she amazed her family with her knowledge right up to her final days.
Above all, Lois cherished her family, she loved spending time at “The Farm” with Glen (dad) and family. Her pride and love for each member were evident in the joy that lit up her eyes during family gatherings and visits. She loved chatting on the phone to her children and grandchildren and very rarely missed making a birthday phone call to us. Each of us has treasured memories with her—from camping trips to baking lessons, especially her famous pie crust recipe. Our family joked “who needs skip the dishes, we have mom to bake and cook for us." Lois was the cornerstone of every family event, always arriving with her signature pies, buns, beet pickles, cinnamon buns, and baked goods. No matter where we tried pie, it was never quite as good as Grandma’s. Many of us also have something lovingly sewn by her—a quilt, pajamas, potholders, or a fleece coat—that we will always hold dear. At 93, during Lois’s last fishing trip, she caught the largest fish of the day and had her picture placed on the brag wall at Canyon Creek Harbor, Slave Lake; you could not wipe the smile off her face.
She never complained; whenever asked if she would like to join in an activity or go on a road trip, her answer was always yes, followed by, "When should I be ready?"
Mom has always been the strongest woman we know. Last December, mom had a significant fall. Over the last 10 months, she fought bravely and persevered through every challenge.
Lois is survived by and will always be lovingly remembered by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, friends, and family.
