Lillian (Luba) Yakiwchuk was born in Poland on September 2, 1935, to Samuel and Maria Nichyporuk. She was the fifth girl of seven girls, and was named by her father, as Luba in Ukrainian means “love”.Luba immigrated to Canada as a young child of four years old, with her mother and father, sisters Nina (Wolodko), Tillie Tamara (Yakimchuk), and Neda (Murray). The family settled in the Bonnyville area and began farming. Shortly after arriving in Canada, sisters Sonia (Shewchuk) and Dina (Fisher) were born.Luba attended the University of Alberta and obtained her teaching degree. She taught in a one room schoolhouse for a year and then met the love of her life, Metro Yakiwchuk. Metro and Luba settled in Jasper, Alberta, after their marriage on July 14, 1956. They welcomed six children into the world, Samuel, Susan (Denis Michaud), Metro Gary (Rosemary), Catherine (Chad Benko), Kenneth (Pat Baxter), and Alan (Corinne).
Luba leaves to mourn her grandchildren, Julie (Kevin), Shelly (Dustin), Andrew (Holly), Mathew (Ashley), Brian, Elyse (Justin), Keely (Cass), Bennett (Eryn), Christopher (Sujani), Kevin, Jackie (Bryan) and great grandchildren, Carter, Colby, Elaina, Gavin and Aimee. Luba also leaves behind her sisters Tillie Tamara and Sonia, sister in laws Myrtle Douville and Violet Yakiwchuk, brother in laws Bill Yakiwchuk and Alex Fisher as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service will be held at the Jasper United Church on June 29, 2023 at 11:00 AM with interment to follow at the Jasper Park Cemetery.
