"Ken" Kenneth Sawka Obituary

Heaven welcomes a new Oilers fan

Kenneth William James Sawka passed away peacefully in Jasper, Alberta, on August 10th, 2025. He lived 80 years filled with joy, connection, and adventure.

It was in his hometown of Jasper in 1973 that he fell for his wife Connie after seeing her work the Atha-B snack bar. Together they built a home filled with love and laughter where they raised two “perfect” daughters and later welcomed two granddaughters who lit up their Gigi’s life.

Ken never missed an Oilers game, even if it meant listening to the car radio in a hotel parking lot. He cheered with the intensity of a lifelong fan, riding every high and low of the game. A big goal meant a loud whoop and a grin that could light up the room. His enthusiasm was contagious and his passion for sports extended from hockey to golf, football, and beyond. The family living room was always filled with Ken’s energy as he’d cheer for the Oilers with a high five, root for his golf pick with a booming “Come on, Ricky baby!” and sing along to Willie Nelson and Kenny Rogers loud enough for everyone to hear.

Friends knew Ken as someone who could make you feel welcome the moment you met him. Whether it was swapping hockey stories over a beer, telling a joke on the back nine, or chatting over a neighbour’s fence, people gravitated towards him. He had a gift for making every time a good time.

He leaves behind his cherished wife Connie; adored children, Brie Sawka (Tom Keney) and Keri Jo Moore (Cody); treasured grandchildren, Hope and Nova Moore; sisters-in-law Lee and Korey Woytkiw; and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss his quick wit, loyal friendship, and familiar voice cheering for the Oilers. He was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Blanche Sawka, and his sister, Bonnie Atkinson.

We are forever grateful for the dedicated, compassionate and unwavering care provided to Ken by each and every healthcare professional and staff member at Jasper Alpine Summit Lodge. Along with Ken’s bright smile, you brought out the best of him.

A Celebration of Ken’s Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alpine Summit (memo: DAL activity fund-Sawka), Parkinson Canada, or a cause personal to you.
