It is with heavy hearts that we announce that our mother, June (Condin) Mitchell, passed away in the early hours of January 18, 2026, with her family by her side at the Continuing Care Facility in Edson.
June was born June 24, 1929, in Vegreville, Alberta. She had two siblings, a brother Lorne and a sister Rosemary. They spent most of their early years in Wildwood Alberta, where her dad owned and operated an automotive repair garage.
Mom loved sports in her early years and played ladies hardball as a young girl. The family moved to Edson while Mom was still in high school, where she met Gordon. They were married March 25, 1948.
Mom spent the first portion of her married life raising her family and tending to close to two hundred foster kids that she and Dad took in over the years. Once all her kids were through school, she ventured into the workforce, working at places such as the Branch Inn Café, Pro-Testers Oil and Gas Services, and finally as Administrator at the Parkland Lodge.
Mom always planted and grew a huge garden, and she loved her flowers. She was an amazing cook and baker; she would always make enough extra cinnamon buns to feed her kids and have extras for all of the kids on the school bus. She was a typical farm wife that could make a pound of hamburger feed a dozen people and still have leftovers.
Mom had very diverse interests, most which revolved around home and family. She loved to go out to the bush and pick all types of berries to can. Mom was the consummate multi-tasker. She spent any spare time she had sitting in her recliner chair knitting slippers, sweaters etc. for her family, all the while watching her soap operas or Blue Jays on tv. Mom was a loyal Blue Jays baseball fan and Calgary Flames fan (much to the dismay of most family members). She rarely missed a game.
Mom and Dad held the first Edson Rodeo at the farm in Bickerdike in 1958.
She loved the mountains and made numerous trips to Jasper over the years with her family.
Her greatest love, however, was always for her family. Mom was small in stature, but if her children were spoken ill of, or threatened, she became a tiger.
Mom is survived by her 6 children, 14 grandchildren, two step granddaughters and 20 great grandchildren:
Son Roy (Pat) with sons Raymond (Jeanene), Ryan (Rebecca), Bradley (Kayla) and their families;
Son Bob (Jackie) with daughter Dawn (Todd), son Mark (Keri) and their families;
Son Keith (Kathy) and daughter Sheri (Darcy);
Son Rodney (April) with son Shane, daughter Crystal (Kyle), stepdaughters Dawn and Jeri (Ron), and their families;
Daughter Kathy with her daughters Taryn (Riley) and Ashley, son Jordan, daughters Brooke and Pam, and son Colt and their families;
and last (but not least) daughter Shirley (Marcel).
June was predeceased by her husband Gordon, as well as her brother Lorne Condin and her sister Rosemary Grant.
The family would like to express a warm Thank you to Dr. Robinson and the staff and aides at the Edson and Hinton Continuing Care Facilities and the Edson Parkland Lodge for the wonderful care and compassion given to our mom during her stays in these facilities.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Edson Continuing Care Facility or the Edson Parkland Lodge in June Mitchell’s memory.
A private family Service will take place in the spring, when the new seeds are planted, the grass is green and the flowers are blooming, as per Mom’s wishes.
Mom always had a smile, a great sense of humour and a positive attitude toward life.
Keep smiling Mom – Heaven has gained another Angel.
Edson Funeral Home has been entrusted with all arrangements.
