Irene Sawatzky

April 3, 1931 – January 12, 2019

Mrs. Irene Sawatzky of Edson, beloved wife of Mr. Wally Sawatzky, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at the age of 87 years.

Irene was born in Richard, Saskatchewan to Bernard & Ann Neufeld. She was raised in the Binscarth, Manitoba area on a farm with her 4 brothers Jake, Bernard, John & Clarence and her 3 sisters Kay, Annie & Grace.

Irene completed grade 9 in country school and moved to Winkler, Manitoba in 1948 where she met Wally. They married November 2, 1950 in Winkler, before moving to Hamilton, Ontario where they started their family with Wanda.

They moved back to Winkler in 1952 where they had Rick and Randy. In January of 1956, they moved to Dryden, Ontario but had to leave due to pollution from the pulp mill. August of that year they moved to Edson to be near Irene’s mother. Joy was born in 1957, with Roy following in 1961, and then Tammy in 1964.

Irene started work at King Koin Laundromat in 1966 and went to work at J&K Hardware in 1970. In 1977 she started at Sea Spray Laundromat until 1986.

Irene loved to cook, bake and enjoyed large family meals as family was most important to her. She enjoyed playing games, camping, dancing, long walks and her puzzles.

Besides her loving husband Wally, Irene will be lovingly remembered by her children Wanda (Pete) Haire, Tammy (Ken) Ramsay, Rick (Dora) Sawatzky, and Roy Sawatzky; 13 grandchildren Darren (Leanne), Brent (Allison), Elaine (Mark), Tyler (Amy), Lorissa (Tyler), Tyler D., Blake (Brittany), Amber (Matt), Faline (Nat), Vanessa, Andy (Lynsy), David (Terrina) and Bailey; 18 great-grandchildren Camren, Ashton, Talia, Autumn, Layla, Dalton, Spencer, Nolan, Abigail, Sawyer, Ryder, Brodie, Zackery, Owen, Landon, Eli, Mackenzie, and Marley; sisters Kay, Annie, Grace; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

Irene was predeceased by her son Randy in 1975, daughter Joy in 2008, as well as her parents Bernard and Ann; and brothers Jake (Jean), Bernard, John (Jean), and Clarence.

A Funeral Service was held at 1:00pm on Friday, January 18, 2019 at the Royal Canadian Legion in Edson, with Pastor George Stone, officiating.
