Henrietta Benbow Obituary

It is with profound sadness we share the passing of our mother, Reta Benbow, who died peacefully in Hinton September 1st, 2022, at the golden age of 92.

Mom was born in Edmonton on March 23, 1930, to Dutch parents Henry and her biological mom, who passed when mom was 3, and got her new Dutch mom, Henrietta, after that.

She was predeceased by her husband David, son Dwayne, and siblings Jean Walker, J. Helen Murray, Francis Hicks, Betty Spevako and Henry Vanderheide Jr.

It was in Edmonton mom met the love of her life and soulmate Dave. They were married on June 14, 1952 and spent a beautiful 33 years together. They moved to Hinton in 1956 where dad was an accountant for North Western Pulp & Power. Always by his side, she was a partner in all aspects of their life here. From business ventures to politics to community service and local history. Downhill skiing and camping with family and friends were part of their lives but they enjoyed going to Hawaii together most of all until dad’s tragic passing, November 22, 1985.

Mom was a strong, vibrant, classy lady and was known for her great smile and caring ways. She volunteered for many community organizations for many years. Especially close to her heart, the Good Companions Hall and being a faithful member of the United Church, which gave her much comfort and was her sanctuary.

She lived her life with grace and dignity and loved her friends and family dearly. Her grandkids and great grandkids were a light in her life and never far from her thoughts.

Mom leaves to cherish sweet memories her children, son Warren (Cindy Buhler), son Melvin (Debbie), Ashley (Kevin), Heitland, Gillian (Doug) Bennison, daughter Barbara (Randy) Nothof, Ryan (Cierra) Koda & Donavin, Brendan Nothof, son Gregory (Sherry), daughter-in-law Shelley, Mandy (Sean), Thomas & Cohen Mumby, Christina (Kevin) Georgeson, Ty & Natalie, Jamie (Mark) Davy, Caileb & Kennedy. Mark, Henry & Adam Cole and their families.

Also left to mourn, her sister Anne Miller and brother Richard (Ada) Vanderheide and numerous relatives, nieces and nephews.

We are thankful for the host of friends who filled her life with much happiness along her life’s journey as well.

Per mom’s wishes, her Memorial Service will be held at the Hinton United Church on Saturday, September 24, 2022, at 1:00 PM.
