Harold Richard Smith
August 27, 1934 – July 6, 2020
Mr. Harold Richard Smith of Edson, passed away on Monday, July 6, 2020 at the age of 85 years.
Richard was born August 27, 1934 to parents John and Anna Smith. He started school in 1939/1940 in Wolf Creek where he attended grades 1 through 9. The principal moved all kids back one year because they weren’t “smart enough”. Richard moved to Edson School for grades 9 through 11 at the Red Brick and Central. Pop Dakin was the teacher and Mr. Stonehawker taught Shop.
Richard rode his bicycle from Wolf Creek to Edson for school until Speedy Thompson got the school bus.
Richard started working with Jim driving truck, hauling everything from coal from Foothills Mines to hauling treated power poles all over Alberta. He started at Centre Service in 1957 until 1967 where he started at Bulk Station until retiring.
Richard enjoyed being outdoors and in his younger days could often be found hunting or fishing. In more recent years, cards were his favorite pastime. He met Shirley Stone and travelled many miles before her passing in 1982.
Richard will be lovingly remembered by Sean (Carla) Smith, Crystal (Jim) Macphee, Jim (JoAnne) Mcdonald, Donna (Garry) Wiltse, Leslie Stone, Julie (Gerry) Sparks, Evelyn (Fern) Pelletier, Dave (Eva) Stone, Dale (Carrie) Stone and families.
He was predeceased by his partner Shirley Stone in 1982, father John in 1969, mother Anna in 1985, brother Jim in 1998 and brother Jack in 1998.
A Celebration of Richard’s Life will be held at 1:00pm on Thursday, July 16, 2020 at 1333 – 63 Street, Edson, AB. Interment will follow in the Glenwood Cemetery at 3:00pm.
