Hans Carl Schaerer

Hans Carl Schaerer passed away peacefully at the age of 94 years, on the afternoon of November 11th, 2024, at the Pine Center in the Edson Long Term Care Center.

Hans is survived by his children, Thomas Schaerer (of Edson, AB.), Detlef Schaerer (of Saanich, B.C.) and Alexander Schaerer (wife Kimberley, nee Farion) and his most precious and beloved grandchildren Logan Schaerer (husband Thomas Weir) and Emma Schaerer (all of Edmonton, AB.).

Born on January 31st, 1930, to Hans and Gertrud Schärer-Schneeberger in Thoerigen, Switzerland, Hans was the second eldest of eight children.

Hans was pre-deceased by his wife, Johanna (nee Schlitter, January 8th, 2022), his parents; Hans & Gertrud, his sisters; Trudy (deceased in childhood), Freida (Kohler), Clare (Dominie), Ruth (Steudler), Elisabeth (Haussener) and Martha (Matti). His brother Fritz is the sole surviving sibling.

You would often find Hans and Johanna working in their amazing garden or tinkering around the acreage or just having a coffee as they watched the birds, and the deer eat from the bird feeders. Hans loved to be outside, especially with his animals, the sheep and rabbits that he kept as pets that surely reminded him of his childhood. Hans loved nature, the mountains, all animals and clear blue mountain lakes, Jasper and Waterton Lakes National Parks were two of his most favorite places. Hans' other hobbies included stamp collecting, quilting and doing jigsaw puzzles with Johanna. And let’s not forget his fondness for hubcaps. When driving, one eye would always be on the lookout for these silvery little discs.

For many years, the wonderful and dedicated staff at the Edson Long Term Care Center have been caring for our mom (in Aspen) and for our dad (in Pine). Our entire family is so appreciative for their commitment to the care and well being of our parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that tribute donations be made to any facility for the care and rescue of animals.
