George Paul West

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of George Paul West into the arms of his Saviour on November 26, 2024, at the age of 90 in Hinton, Alberta. A ripe old age, yes, but still gone too soon.

He is lovingly missed and survived by his wife Edna West, son Larry, daughters Marjorie (Tim) Whiteley and Paula (Gerry) Appel, all of Hinton, AB. Also surviving George are his six grandchildren: Tyler Appel, Matthew Appel, and Anna (Chris) Couture of Hinton, AB; Travis (Jessica) Appel of Sylvan Lake, AB, Samuel (Virina) Whiteley of Edmonton, and Michael (Mariah) Whiteley of Calgary, AB; and five great-grandchildren: Reese and Erica Couture of Hinton, Landon and Rylan Appel of Sylvan Lake and Lazarus Whiteley of Calgary, AB.

He is also survived by his Nova Scotia family including his sisters Vivien Hartt, Wilma (Gerald) Baker, sisters-in-law June West and Carol West as well as numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws across Nova Scotia, Alberta, and BC.

George was born in 1934 to Marjorie and Asahel West and raised on a dairy farm in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia. In 1956 he left to join the Royal Canadian Air Force, where for the next ten years he travelled and was stationed in France as well as in many parts of Canada. In 1966 Dad left the military to come work in the pulp mill in Hinton. Here he raised his family and happily remained for the rest of his life, working in the mill, the CRC mine, and with the Dept. of Transportation at the Hinton/Jasper airport. Dad enjoyed working in every job he ever had, and he loved living in this beautiful part of Canada. Camping and spending time with family were his favourite things to do. We will miss his quiet strength.

We extend a special thank you to the doctors and nursing staff at the Hinton hospital for their genuine compassion and care of George through this time.

A Funeral Service will be held at Hinton’s Grace Church on December 5th, 2024, at 1 pm.
