Born Jan 1941 in Sherbrooke QC to Harvard and Rita McVeety, Gail shared her time with her two twin sisters, Doreen and Maureen. She received her early training in Toronto and went on to work in nursing in Toronto, Slave Lake and Hinton before moving to Jasper and working at Seton General Hospital for 11 years. She retired in 1991. She enjoyed hiking and fishing in the Jasper area and was very proud of her garden! She travelled with the Order of the Eastern Star, enjoying the fellowship it offered. She was an avid knitter, many folks received her lovely sweaters and socks and dishcloths and knitted toys! Gail was also well-known in the Jasper community, having assisted in many births and volunteering in adult fitness and later in the Thrift Shop of the Jasper United Church.
Gail married Frank Leong on Christmas Eve in 1988. They both had children from previous marriages - Gail, one son, Steve (Sherry) and Frank, two daughters, Anne (Dave) and Jayne (Marc). Frank and Gail built a home in Cabin Creek in Jasper and lived there for several years until moving to the Alpine Summit Senior’s Lodge. Frank passed away late 2020, while Gail continued to enjoy her life at the Alpine with many familiar faces. Gail is survived by Frank’s daughters, her sisters, her son, and many family members.
Gail’s family wishes to thank the Alpine for the great care she received in her later years, and the doctors and medical team for their compassionate and caring advice.
A private family memorial will be planned for later. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada as a tribute to Gail.
