Emily Stroebel passed peacefully on Oct 21, 2024, in her home in Grande Cache. Emily was born in 1930 in what was the Czech Republic, one of 7 children who did farm work while going to school. After school she went on to work in factories and boarding schools in Germany. Emily was a WWII refugee whose family had very little, but her parents instilled a very strong work ethic to work for what you want and be kind.
Emily immigrated to Canada in 1956 and in 1959 married Ernie with whom there were 57yrs of adventures. They lived on remote Alberta Forest Service Ranger Stations in Calling Lake and Muskeg until 1970 when Ernie lost his sight forcing a move to Edson. Their children were born in 1961 and 1962. She moved to Grande Cache after Ernie’s passing in 2016.
Emily’s strong work ethic, devotion to family, sense of humour and good-natured teasing served her and her family well through difficult times. There was always great food and Christmas cookies extraordinaire. She had an incredible memory for rhymes, songs and sayings learned in childhood. Her wisdom, pragmatism and occasional stubbornness were among her best-known qualities.
Emily was predeceased by all her siblings, her youngest son Wolf and husband Ernie. She is survived by her eldest son Len (Karen) and grand daughters Sydni, Alexi and Halli. As well, she has many nieces and nephews in BC, Saskatchewan and Germany.
The family is forever grateful to the staff of the Whispering Pines Lodge as well as the nurses of AHS for contributing to the quality of Emily’s last years in Grande Cache. Also to the many friends in Edson who helped our parents while they were there.
