Elvia Carolina (Steen) Dueck

It is with deep sorrow and great loss that we mourn the passing of Elvia Carolina Dueck nee Steen (mother, sister, aunt and friend) on August 25,2025, at the age of 74. She was currently living in Calgary at the Agecare McKenzie Towne long term facility.
Elvia was born in Catemaco, Veracruz, Mexico. She moved with her family to Hinton, Alberta, Canada, when she was 7 years old. Her parents were Piet and Josefina Steen, her brother George and sister Silvia. When Elvia was 15 when her parents adopted another son, David.
Elvia attended university in Michigan and earned her bachelor’s degree in education. Elvia taught elementary school in Lacombe, Alberta. She then went on to become a missionary in Choluteca, Honduras, for about a year and a half. When teaching in Calgary, she met and married Ben Dueck in 1990. They moved to Hinton, Alberta, and had one daughter, Hannah Carolina Dueck, born in December 1993.
Her husband Ben passed away in December 1999. Elvia and Hannah moved to Medicine Hat shortly after that.
Elvia loved God and her family. She was her mother’s primary caregiver for the last four years of our mother’s life. Elvia enjoyed taking mom to see live shows at the Rosebud Theatre and taking her for drives in the country to enjoy the day.
Elvia loved her pets, dogs and cats. She loved taking her dogs for walks along the river, just enjoying nature. She also loved singing and reading her bible with mom. Elvia was active in her church, The Embassy, where she made many strong friendships.
Elvia is survived by her daughter Hannah, her brother George Steen (Luisa, Skyler and Stanley, Samuel, Emily, Rowan and Willow), sister-in-law Diana Reineking, her sister Silvia Waddell (Ian, Nathan, Michelle, Pallas and Naia), Nadine McAleese (Cruz), as well as nephew Michael Steen. Elvia was predeceased by her father Pieter Steen, her mother Josefina Steen, her brother David Steen and her husband Ben Dueck. 

The family had a quiet Graveside Service for her in Hinton, Alberta, on August 30, 2025.
