Elizabeth Wright (Stuart) Murray

The family of Elizabeth Wright Murray (née Stuart) regretfully announce that she passed peacefully on December 21, 2022, at the age of 91 in the Hinton Healthcare Centre.

Elizabeth (Betty) was born December 5, 1931, in Aberdeen Scotland to Alexander and Elizabeth Stuart. She grew up in Pittodrie district and was active in figure- skating, and tennis in the Torry Athletic Park. She also spent many weekends at her aunt and uncle’s dairy farm outside of Aberdeen and was grateful for their love and support throughout her lifetime.

Betty was a graduate of Woodend Hospital’s Nursing and Midwifery program and began work at the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital in 1955. It was there that she met the love of her life Duncan Murray and they wed at Kings College Chapel in September 1957. Duncan persuaded her to set out for the Canadian Rockies and move to Hinton, Alberta later that same year.

Betty was a dedicated wife and mother first and foremost. We were fortunate to have her guidance and support throughout our lifetime. She especially loved her role as Nana. Her children and grandchildren loved her dearly and will never forget her determination, common-sense, and undying love and caring for them.

Betty and Duncan travelled extensively throughout the years but were happiest spending time in Hawaii and at their summer home on Mara Lake. She loved to read all genres and avidly watched politics, tennis and figure-skating on television.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law, Fiona and Aaron Galbraith (Hinton); daughter and son-in-law, Morag and Jim Garland (Edmonton); son and daughter-in-law, Ewen and Tanya Murray (Edson). She will be especially missed by her 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, Siobhan, Kara and Maeve (Houston, Texas); Seumas, Lauren, Cohen, and Callihan (Ottawa, ON); Kieran (Singapore); Calum (Edson); Kyle, Sierra and Graham (Edson); and Catriona (Edson). Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband Duncan, her parents, Alexander and Elizabeth, and by brother Alec.

At Betty’s request, there will be no public service. The family will hold a private celebration of her life at a later date.
