Elaine Mitchell Obituary

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Elaine Mitchell on September 17, 2022, in Hinton, Alberta at the age of 72.

Elaine will forever be remembered and missed by her husband Jim, her kids Stephen (Liana), David (Trisha) and Mark (Jenni). To her grandkids she was known as Nana and will be missed by all 9 of them – Carson (Ashley), Jacey, Allysa (Nate), Rhiann (Kody), Sydnee, Abbey, Jack, Braeden and Jessica along with her two great grandchildren Mick and Ashton. She leaves behind her brother Ian (Jenny) and sisters Pauline (Scott), Julie, Tricia (Peter) along with Jim’s sisters Caroline, Marie (Terry), Donna (Ron), Barb (Brian) and his brother George along with numerous nieces and nephews. Elaine was predeceased by her parents Harold and Irene Parry, brothers Graham and Keith, her father-in-law Douglas Mitchell and brother in laws Doug and Bob.

Elaine and Jim were married April 8, 1967, in Binbrook, Ontario and in 1977, along with their 3 sons, made a major move to Calgary, Alberta and eventually settled in Nanton, Alberta in 1980. For 17 years they called Nanton home, where they raised their boys, were very involved in the community (hockey, church, golf club, curling) and still have numerous friends and family there. In 1997 they moved to Hinton where they lived for 4 years before moving to Edmonton where they lived for the next 21 years. In May of this year, they had moved back to Hinton to be closer to family.

Elaine will be remembered as a kind, generous, caring woman. You did not need to have the same last name to be considered a family member and the doors to their home were always opened to their friends, their son’s friends or anyone needing a place to simply catch a break from life’s curveballs.  Elaine was an avid reader, loved to cook, loved a great cup of coffee (or glass of wine) in her backyard oasis, enjoyed gardening, travelling, and spending time with her family. Her and Jim drove many miles and spent many hours in arenas watching the grandkids play hockey or figure skate, dance halls watching the granddaughters dance, some very cool road trip adventures and when they were in Edmonton visiting it was never too tough a task for the grandkids to convince Nana and Papa to make a trip to West Edmonton Mall for the shopping, the food, the waterpark or the rides. They lived for their grandkids and have watched 5 of them  graduate, two get married, two have kids of their own and all of them mature into fun-loving, hardworking, respectful young men and women. They left Ontario 45 years ago as a young family of 5 and saw that group grow into a family of 22 with number 23 on the way. Live, Love and Laugh are words she lived by. She will always be loved and missed.

A celebration of life will be held in Nanton, Alberta (date to be determined). In lieu of floral donations, people are encouraged to donate to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank Dr. Johnston, Dr. Martin and all the staff at the Hinton Hospital for their exceptional care and kindness during Elaine’s last days.
