Doug grew up in Marlboro and attended school there until he was in Grade 3, at this time he went to Edson but quit school in Grade 8 and went to work for Williams Oil Transport. Doug loved driving truck and recently said that he wished he had continued hauling heavy equipment.
In July 1976 Doug married Susan (Anderson) Roberts. They had 2 children – Nola and Chad. Doug worked hard at providing for his family and loved to tease his grandchildren.
Doug started driving gravel truck for Dave Imber Trucking in 1975/1976. In 1978, tired of trucking, Doug started working for Neil Howland of Neil’s Welding as shop foreman. In 1979 Doug went to Hinton to obtain his GED to attend NAIT welding school for two years. There was no money going to school though. He finally received $18.00/hr before leaving Neil’s Welding to go driving truck and doing mechanic work for Gering Gravel. Al Gering said Doug could work year-round. He re-built an old cat for Al Gering and worked for Gering Gravel Sales for 13 years.
He also worked for Al Jackson hauling logs to Whitecourt/Slave Lake in the winters of 1987/1988/1989. He drove logging truck for Roy Rose hauling long logs to Vancouver B.C.
In June of 2004 Doug decided to strike out on his own and bought his own Kenworth and in 2011 he sold the truck. After selling the truck Doug worked for Darcy’s Welding.
