Dorothy Edith (Gladu) Courtereille

Dorothy was born October 17, 1936, in Grouard, Alberta. She was a member of Whitefish Lake First Nation. Cree was her first language; she was a fluent cree speaker. She was the eldest of fourteen children. She spent her early years in Grouard where she built many cherished memories growing up with family. She and her late husband Peter Courtereille moved to Hinton in 1971 with their children. 

Dorothy was a mother of six sons, she was a grandmother (kokum) of thirteen and a great-grandmother (chapan) of twelve, as well as a great-great-grandmother. Dorothy had many extended family members as well. 

Dorothy had done extensive work within the Hinton community and across Treaty 6 & 8. She worked 23 years at the Yellowhead Emergency Women’s Shelter before her retirement at the age of 73. She served on the Elder’s Council for the Grande Yellowhead Public School Division. She also worked as an elder and cultural teacher for the catholic schools in the area. Dorothy sat on the board at the Hinton Friendship Center for numerous years as well as the Edson Elder’s Wisdom Circle and served as the Alberta Friendship Center Elder for the Board of Directors. 

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Peter Courtereille, mother Julianne Lamouche, father Dan Lamouche, siblings Jim Sonny Lamouche, Dan Jr. Lamouche, Ken Lamouche, Edna Lamouche and Elsie Lajambe, children Bruce Courtereille, Ronald Smith as well as numerous nephews and grandson Michael Ryan. 

Dorothy was survived by her sons Edward Lester Courtereille, Stanley Courtereille, (Peter) James Courtereille (Laurie Courtereille), Eldon Courtereille, (Randolph) Randy Courtereille (Val Nahatchick) and Glenna Nahatchick (James Nahatchick), surviving siblings Michael Lamouche, Frank Larry Lamouche, Roger Lamouche (Sharon Lamouche), Harley Rusty Lamouche, Marvin Lamouche, Caroline Kim Burk, Janet Clark (Robert Bob Clark) and Darlene Plamondon (David Plamondon), grandchildren Chelsea Price, Juilie Berard, Daniel Courtereille, Dustin Courtereille, Joey Courtereille, Cayley Courtereille, Faith Starlight (AJ Starlight), Kayleigh Wiebe, Cody Hutt (Kelsey Reid), Derek Hutt (Danielle Finch), Peter Courtereille, Brandy Courtereille and Chance Hutt, as well as numerous adopted grandchildren, great-grandchildren Tattyanna Kezar, Skye Wheadon, Charlotte Price, Robyn Price, Koda Starlight, Jacob Starlight, Ryder Starlight and Nova Starlight.

Wake Service on Friday, July 3, 2026, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the Hinton Friendship Centre.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., also at the Hinton Friendship Centre.
