It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Donald (Don) Hugh Hinchey Sr. on August 20, 2023, he left us suddenly and far too soon at the age of 64.
Don was born and raised in Edson, and he built a life here bursting with family and friends. He was a lifelong learner and shared a deep love for knowledge and history of the area. He was constantly searching for information about the historic coal branch and spent his spare time exploring the area with his favourite people. He was predeceased by his mother, Elizabeth (Bess), his father, William (Bill), his brother, Bill, his sister, Agnes, his brother-in-laws, Charlie, Allen, and Gary, his sister-in-law, Edna, his niece, Kathy, and his nephew, Leo. Don is survived by his children, William (Will) Hinchey (Ande) and Donald (Donny) Hinchey Jr. (Shelby) as well as his granddaughters Lilah, Eliza, Blakely, and his greatly anticipated grandson (due November 2023). He is also survived by his beloved sisters Donna, Karen (Lyle) and Mary (Bruce) and his “old dog”, Charlie, as well as many other nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
Don accomplished so much within his short life, but his biggest joy was his grandbabies. He took much pride in being called “Grandad” and had no shortage of love for his girls. His sons take pride in his survival knowledge which he shared freely with anyone who was interested, and which included knowledge of hunting, trapping, foraging, herbalism, mycology (mushrooms) and gardening. He looked forward to his yearly trips to “hunting camp”, where he was the primary firewood harvester, sweat lodge foreman and social beer drinker. He will be remembered by his grandbabies for his sweet tooth and for his irrational fear of cold feet. He loved big, he loved hard, and he was always the first one to say “I Love You(s)”.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Pine Grove Hall on September 2, 2023, from 1-4pm.
Please bring a snack/treat to share if you would like to contribute; tea and coffee will be provided.
In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to Wild Sheep Foundation Alberta Chapter, or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
“You should be here.
You'd be taking way too many pictures on your phone,
Showing them off to everybody that you know back home,
And even some you don't, yeah.
They say now you're in a better place,
And I would be too if I could see your face.
You should be here, standing with your arm around me here
Cutting up, cracking a cold beer
Saying “cheers, hey y'all it's sure been a good year” - Cole Swindell
