Darrell Ronald Weigel

September 12, 1960 ~ July 18, 2023 (age 62) 62 Years Old

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Darrell Ronald Weigel at the Edson Hospital on July 18, 2023, at the age of 63.

Darrell was born September 12, 1960, in Calgary, Alberta to Selena (Tiny) and Ben Weigel.  He was the only son born after his sister Rose-marie, followed by Karen, Selena and Julie.  Life was a challenge being raised with four sisters, but he always did his part to be the big brother with a loving and protective heart.

Darrell struggled in his early years with a hearing impediment that was undiagnosed. Once his problem was rectified, he excelled at a trades school where he graduated and later became a skilled carpenter and overall jack of all trades.  After his school years he worked in the field with his dad as a siding applicator, then later ventured into a partnership with his sister Rose-marie and brother-in-law Lloyd in the construction field.  Lloyd was a great mentor to Darrell leaving a huge void when he passed away in 2004.  He also became an uncle to a few nieces and nephews as our family expanded and grew.  He had a love for children and never minded babysitting when needed.  While living in the community of Yellowstone, near Gunn, Alberta, Darrell met the love of his life Joan O’Shea who was on an exchange program from Australia.  When Joan departed back to Australia, he was soon to follow her where Joan sponsored him to apply for his Australian citizenship.  They were married and shortly after had a daughter named Kelly Rose.  She was the apple of her dad’s eye and forever remained in his heart.  After 20 years in Australia and marriage breakup, Darrell returned to live in Canada.  After reuniting with family and friends, looking for a permanent place to settle, his journey took him to a family farm where he enjoyed the serenity of living in the woods.  Darrell was shown a piece of diamond willow by his good friend Clint who spiked his interest and creativity on searching for more.  Soon he had skillfully created a very unique pergola and one of a kind stands for hanging baskets or welcome signs.  His peace and happiness were looking after the grounds on the family farm and the much welcomed voice saying “Darrell, are you here?” Followed by Darrell opening the door to his trailer with a huge smile that his family was back to their cabin.

For a brief time before the passing of his mother just a year ago, he had the opportunity to extend a helping hand and care for her, taking her to appointments, helping with groceries and sharing a meal together.

Darrell was pre-deceased by his parents Tiny and Ben Weigel and brother-in-law Lloyd Sloat.  He is survived by his daughter Kelly Rose Weigel, sisters Rose-marie Sloat, Karen Weigel, Selena Mayer (Allan), Julie Brendel (Shane) and numerous nieces and nephews.

Darrell will be forever remembered in the hearts of those who loved him for his loyalty, sense of humor, love of family, being one of the hardest workers and of his many struggles, suffering and pain.  You are at peace now my brother, father and dear friend, no longer will you be in pain.
