Dawne was born in Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories, on July 12, 1932. She was named after the colour of the dawn on the Mackenzie River. Dawne was the second daughter born to young New Zealanders who had adventured to Canada to work for the Hudson’s Bay Company.
Dawne began her life in the remote wilderness of the Northwest Territories. Growing up in Edmonton, she always longed for a big city life: “Montreal or New York!” Her dream came true when she married Bill Andrews from Montreal in 1952. Dawne and Bill raised four children. It was an interesting family life living in several cities and provinces across Canada - Montreal, Kelowna, Toronto, Vancouver and Invermere. Dawne retired to Duncan, British Columbia, where she lived close to family on Salt Spring Island for over twenty years.
In 2022, Dawne moved back to her home Province of Alberta and settled in Jasper, a place of significant family history. Dawne was evacuated from her home due to the Jasper Wildfire and returned to live out the remainder of her days with her daughter Leslie Andrews and son-in-law Robert Langevin. Dawne was moved to the Alpine Summit Seniors Lodge in Jasper, Alberta, for palliative care. Our family is forever grateful for the generous care and attention she received.
Dawne was an introverted extrovert. She was often alone, dedicated to her creative practices as a dressmaker, interior designer, visual artist and homemaker. Socially she was the most fun, lively, witty, and could always be counted on to be the life of the party.
