The family of Clement Joseph Raymond Lavoie are saddened to announce his passing on October 6th, 2022, at the Hinton Care Centre at the age of 83.
Clem was born in Vimy, Alberta on June 22, 1939, to Rachel and Lucian Lavoie. Clem grew up in many small towns in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
He was the second oldest of seven children, having five sisters and one brother. The family lived in Rob until the untimely death of their father Lucien in 1950. As a young child, Clem enjoyed dancing while his father played the violin. He was also an avid hockey player. Growing up in those areas, he grew to appreciate nature, and all it had to offer, fishing, hunting, and the great outdoors.
Clem Married his high school sweetheart, Betty Bauer in 1957. They quickly became a family of seven with the arrivals of their five children in three and a half years. Clem worked at number of different jobs: pipelining, working on oil rigs, loading pulp wood, until 1967 when started his own business. He purchased a Drag Line and did ditching, road construction in the summer, and loading pulp wood in the winter. Owning his own equipment, he quickly learned the value of maintaining his equipment to keep it running reliably.
In 1971, he moved his family and business to Prince George to pursue better opportunities. His business quickly grew, having two crews working in different parts of the province.
In 1975, Clem and Betty divorced. Not long after that, Clem took a contract on Williston Lake. Due to the longer travel time, and experiencing equipment breakdowns, he decided to get a pilot’s licence, and purchase a plane. The plane earned it’s keep by flying in people, parts, and food into camps. It was one of his great pleasures in life, and he flew wherever he could.
In the early 80’s, there was another downturn in the economy, so all the equipment and the plane were put up on auction.
In 1982 Clem married again to Susan Froehlich. Together they travelled around following the pipeline work, living out of a holiday trailer. In 1986, they moved back to Prince George and purchased an acreage and returned to logging. They divorced in 1994. In 1998, Clem sold off everything again and retired.
Clem spent the next twenty years, travelling to every province and territory in his trailer, and spent the winters in Arizona and Mexico. He travelled as far north as the Arctic Circle, and as far south as Mexico. These were some of his favourite times, travelling where he wanted and doing what he wanted.
Clem had two other passions: dancing and playing golf. His other joy was spending time with family.
Clem was pre-deceased by his father Lucien (1950), his mother Rachel (1992), his sister Bernadette (Berni) (2011), his sister Anna (2022), and his son Perry’s wife Maureen (2021).
He will be lovingly remembered by his five children: Linda, Kerry (Carolyn), Perry, Richard, and Shirley (Ken); his grandchildren Jennifer, Katherine (Colby), Christopher (Renee), Bobby (Tara), Kara; two great-grandsons Logan and Jack, and as well as his sisters Aline Lanthier, Eva Kennedy, Therese Pempeit, and Raymond Lavoie (Evie); and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Clem worked hard and played hard, and we will all miss him.
As per Clem’s request, there will be a small family gathering at a later date.
