Brigitte Hedwig (Demuth) Bulda

With heavy hearts we share the news that Brigitte Bulda of Hinton, AB died peacefully on Saturday August 6, 2022.

Brigitte was born in Berthelsdorf (then Germany, now Poland) on April 7, 1944, to Anna and Oswald Demuth. Oswald died in November, never having seen his daughter.

Near the end of WW2, Brigitte’s family was relocated to Dortmund, where Anna met and married Erich Haus and added Brigitte’s three brothers to their family.

In addition to overcoming many hardships in post-war Germany, Brigitte completed academic streaming in school, starting her apprenticeship as a legal secretary.

Through a youth hiking group, she met Horst, her partner for life. When Horst had the opportunity to move to Hinton to work at Northwestern Pulp and Power in 1963, Brigitte was quick to follow. She arrived April 1964 and they married May 23, 1964.

Brigitte and Horst worked hard and built a new life in Canada, living in Pedley for many years. In 1967 they added Christine to the family.

Brigitte worked for the Credit Union before switching to insurance. In 1977 she started Harmony Insurance Ltd. She dispensed pink cards, compassion, and words of wisdom (mostly appreciated) to employees and clients alike until her retirement in 1999. She was active in the Valley Business Association and the Insurance Brokers Association of Alberta and was a charter member of the Hinton Rotary Club.

Brigitte and Horst enjoyed traveling and spent many winters in Yuma, AZ. Their many trips included Columbia, Cuba, Venezuela, New Zealand, Australia, Mexico, and various destinations in Europe. Brigitte’s solo hiking trip to the Highlands of Scotland was a highlight for her as well.

Respected for her attention to detail, focus and professionalism in her work, Brigitte seemed the most content when she and Horst were entertaining friends. Brigitte was an amazing hostess, cook and baker. It was not unusual for her to be up late (or early) creating a special request birthday cake … and her Schwartzwalder Kirsch Torte, rum balls, and other Christmas cookies will never be successfully replicated!

A major brain aneurysm in 2009 drastically changed plans for the rest of their retirement, but she fought back to health after many complications. Her determination (aka. stubborn streak) shone through on more than one occasion.

On August 6^th Brigitte passed away peacefully at the Hinton Hospital, with Horst and Christine by her side.  We send our greatest appreciation to Dr. Erin Cote for her competence and compassion over the years, Dr. Chow for amazing technical skill combined with optimism, and the caring and skilled support/nursing teams at both U of A and Hinton Healthcare Centre.

Brigitte is survived by Horst (her partner for 61 years), daughter Christine Cassidy, son-in-law Teras Cassidy, and grandchild Kat Cassidy, as well as her brothers Manfred, Erich (Gerda), Werner, sister-in-law Renate Buehling and numerous nieces and nephews. We are thankful for the many friends who have been along on the journey.

A memorial service will be held Saturday September 10, 2022, at 2:00 pm at the Hinton Legion. If you have some stories to share with the family, please email christine@geeknationtours.
