Betty Mazur Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Betty Mazur on September 10, 2025, in Edson, AB, at the age of 95.

On November 15, 1929, Betty was born to Edith and James Ryan in Grande Prairie, Alberta.

Betty was the second oldest of seven children and spent her childhood living on the family farm in Wapiti, where she completed her schooling.  At 18 she moved to Grande Prairie and worked in the Grande Prairie Hospital as a cook.  Having an adventurist soul, Betty purchased a car, and she and her cousin Irene headed North to work in the logging camps. It was there that her reputation of great cook and baker was started and followed her through life.

Along the way she met Mike in Valemount, B.C. The two were wed on September 26, 1956, in Edmonton.  Betty and Mike first resided in Vilna, where they had six children: Lawrence, Gerald, Marlene, Ted, Terry and Marcie, moving to Dunster, B.C., then on to Valemount, B.C. While in Valemount, Betty worked at the Sarak as a cook, rode horses with her dear friend Jean and stayed close with her cousin Irene.

In 1973 they move to Carrot Creek, Alberta, and set roots.

There they farmed, ran a sawmill, trucking company and Betty also sold AVON, achieving the Presidents Award year after year and had her hand in catering events in the area.  Betty loved sports, especially baseball, hockey and curling. She started curling herself into her 50’s and continued well into her 80’s, looking forward to curling every winter, she always remained involved in the community.  It seemed like she was never without her knitting, watching TV, traveling or just visiting, completing socks, mittens, sweaters, toques and blankets.  She was very well known for her baking: pies, bread, donuts and in the fall a donut party where she would bake dozens of donuts and invite friends and neighbors for tea.  Mondays were always to Peers for the senior luncheon and games, Tuesday evening she looked forward to Cowboy Church in Niton. She loved the fellowship and catching up with friends and neighbours.

Betty is survived by her children: Lawrence Mazur (Bev), Gerald Mazur (Sandy), Marlene Wagner (Dwayne), Ted Mazur (Cheryl), Terry Mazur and Marcie Ollenberg, 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, her sisters May and Ruth, her brothers Gerald and Ken and many nieces and nephews. Betty also leaves behind her dear friends Nancy Bramming, Gwen Archibald, Dorthy Gilbert, Diane Richardson and Bernice Leichnitz.

Betty was predeceased by her Dad James Ryan (1966), her Mom Edith (Blackburn) Ryan (1997), Sister Lois Loftstrum (2004), her husband Mike Mazur (2008), brother Mick Ryan (2020), and granddaughter Linsey Mazur (1983).

A Memorial Service will be held at the Carrot Creek Community Hall on Friday, September 19, 2025 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Ron DeLeeuw presiding.
