It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Bert Walter Hansen on January 2, 2026, at the age of 92.
Bert will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Audrey; his children, Glen (Brenda) and Audra (Dave); his grandchildren, Jessica (Mackenzie), Jordan (Sara), Brett, Lauren, Devin, and Logan; and his great-granddaughters, Hartley, Lainey, and Jamesy.
Bert was born on November 13, 1933, in Edson, Alberta, to Fred and Klara Hansen. In May of 1948, the family moved to Hinton when Fred began operating the Imperial Oil bulk station. Bert later took over the business in 1968, running it for 25 years until his retirement. He was especially proud to see three generations serve as Imperial Oil agents when his son, Glen, assumed operations in 1993.
A lifelong lover of the outdoors, Bert often said his fondest memories were made hunting, trapping, fishing, and camping, as well as exploring new territory while driving fuel truck for his father. He loved the Hinton area and all it had to offer. Winters frequently found Bert curling or working his trapline, an activity he continued well into his early 80s. One of the highlights of his curling career was skipping his team at the Senior Men’s Provincial Championships in 1990. Bert was also among a select group of individuals to achieve a Bighorn Sheep Grand Slam, a remarkable accomplishment and a source of great pride.
Bert will be remembered for his strong will, tireless work ethic, and fierce independence, but above all for his deep love of family. He will be missed.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Pine Valley Lodge in Hinton for the compassionate care shown to Bert during his time there, as well as to Dr. Martin and the many physicians and staff at the Hinton Healthcare Centre for their excellent care over the years.
In keeping with Bert’s wishes, a private interment for immediate family will take place on Saturday, January 10, 2026, with a Celebration of Life to be held on February 21, 2026 at 1:00pm at the Hinton Centre, to honour his remarkable life.
If so desired, memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada in Bert’s memory.
