Bernadette (Bernie) Karlzen passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at the Edson Continuing Care Center, at the age of 90 years.
Marie Joanne Bernadette Baudin was born and raised in the community of North Rosevear, Alberta. After completing a bookkeeper’s course at McTavish Business College, she moved to Whitecourt, Alberta, where she met and wed Eric Karlzen in 1956. Bernie and Eric moved to the farm in Carrot Creek in 1968, where they raised their 5 children. Bernie was an active member of the community, avid gardener and bread baker. If not at home working on the farm, she could be found at the Carrot Creek Hall preparing and cooking meals for her community. She roasted over 200 turkeys, made hundreds of pounds of her famous “Japanese Salad” and too many raspberry squares to count. After retiring from the farm, her and Eric enjoyed building their new home, meeting a new community and golfing in Evansburg, Alberta. When Bernie’s battle with Dementia began, they moved to the beautiful community of the Parkland Lodge.
Bernie is survived by her husband of 69 years, Eric. She was Mother to Eric Jr. (Michelle), Jody (Donna), Anthony (Kathy), Mariea (Gavin) and Jason (Tammy). She was Grandma to Kyle (Candace), Jessica (Dawson), Amanda (Bryce), Devin (Emily), Kaitlyn (Greg), Sarah (Tristan), Josh (Kendra), Ryan (Vivian), Cameron (Alana), Cassandra (Ryan), and Corbin. And she was Great Grandma to Cole, Ella, Ben, Haleigh, Lucas, Landon, Matilda, Eleanor, Myah, Thea, Olivia, Beau, River, Finn and Harper.
A Celebration of Bernie’s Life will be held later this spring when the grass is green and the flowers are blooming.
The Family would like to thank the staff at the Edson Continuing Care Center for their kindness and dedication to Bernie’s care.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Community Care Foundation of Edson and District or a charity of one’s choice.
