Albert "Al" Arthur Mergaert

February 11, 1929 ~ April 26, 2022 (age 93)

It is with sadness our family announces the passing of Albert Arthur Mergaert on April 26, 2022. He was 93.

He grew up in the eastern part of Edmonton with his late mother and father Madeline and Leon Segaert. He had a happy childhood and graduated from St Joseph's high school. He then took his first job shovelling elephant manure at the Edmonton Gardens. His search for a better career took him to SAIT where he learned automotive mechanics. In 1951 he married Barbara Mix and had 4 children, Jeff (deceased as a child), Darryl, James and Bonnie. In 1957 he gathered up his growing family and headed west to Edson.

He opened his first business, Al's Esso, which soon became a major success. For a time this station sold the most fuel in Alberta. For his next venture he bought a Chrysler dealership in 1978 which he operated for ten years. There he sold "tough" Dodge trucks. He would say Dodge trucks are tough alright, they are tough to sell. He was an entrepreneur, not afraid to take a chance.

His family continued to grow, adding Linda, Alison and Leslie.

He then went on to build an industrial park and added numerous rental properties which he kept to his final years.

His favourite times were with family and friends at Bear Lake. Many family suppers and birthdays and anniversaries. He also spent many afternoons with his good friends at the Edson Legion where many of the world's problems were solved.

His family was always important to him. He is survived by Darryl (Debbie), James (Cindy), Bonnie (Gary), Linda (Robert), Alison and Leslie (Brent). He is also survived by his sister Martha and brother Jack. Albert also has 17 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank Dr Gous and his team at the hospital. They were professional and very kind. A special thank you to his caregiver for the last 5 years, Geraldine Pasion. You are truly appreciated.

No service is planned for now.

Donations can be made to Edson Royal Canadian Legion #51 or Edson Health Care Auxiliary.
