Merle Elroy Jones

November 18, 1929 ~ June 12, 2018 (age 88)

The family of Merle Elroy (Bud) Jones, regret to announce the passing of Bud, on Tuesday,  June 12, 2018 at Hinton, Alberta at the age of 88 years.

Bud leaves to mourn his loving wife of 65 years, Viola, son Bryan (Cathy), Daughter Shari (Geoff) and son Bradley (Cindy), grandchildren: Melissa (Tyler), Greg (Kayla), Myles (Taylor), Lindsay (Jared), Ryan (Lindsey), Brad (Cynthia), Jessica Thompson, Chris Thompson (Toby), Zachary, Madison, great grandchildren: Kiara, Tristan, Mason, Tenley, Reid.

Bud worked as a telegraph operator for Canadian National Railways in various locations, lastly at Snaring, AB prior to moving to Hinton in 1959 a month after he began work at Northwestern Pulp and Power (now West Fraser).  In his 33 years there he obtained his 3rd Class Steam Engineering certificate, and in his late forties began a Steamfitter-Pipefitter/Gasfitter apprenticeship. He went on to receive his Red Seal Journeyman status in both trades, and was awarded the highest marks in Alberta in his 3rd year of trade school.

Bud was an avid volunteer. He was very active as an Executive, Coach, and Manager within Hinton Minor Hockey, and as a Kinsmen for many years culminating in 1975, with his being awarded the first "Lifetime Kinsmen Membership" granted in Canada.

After their retirement in 1991, Bud and Vi enjoyed time spent with family and friends, and their favorite activities included golfing, fishing and camping.  They spent many winters in the warmer climates of Arizona. His love, support, and leadership for his Family will be sadly missed.

At Bud's request there will be no service. Instead, a private family gathering will be held at a later date to celebrate his life.

The Family of Bud Jones would like to thank Dr. Martin,  Dr. Lewis, Marilyn Lodder, and the wonderful nursing staff at the Hinton General Hospital for their care over the years, and especially during his final days.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bud's memory to the Hinton Healthcare Foundation on line at hintonhealthcare.ca or by mail in care of Foothills Memorial Chapel-Hinton Funeral Services P.O. Box 6358 Edson, Alberta T7E 1T8 who have been entrusted with the care and arrangements. 780-865-1234.
