John Jacob Koebel

1935 ~ 2018

John Jacob Koebel, age 83, of Jasper AB, passed away on Christmas Eve surrounded by loved ones at the Seton Hospital in Jasper.

John was born on June 4th, 1935 in Edson, AB to George & Mary Koebel. After Edson High School, he attended the Provincial Institute of Technology and Arts in Calgary (known as SAIT today). In the early 50's, work brought him to Jasper where he discovered his passion for skiing. He moved to Jasper and met Gabrielle (Googs) Morin whom he married in 1961. A plumber, electrician and mechanical contractor by trade, John was involved in the construction of many of Jasper's key landmarks, commercial buildings and residences. John also built his own commercial building downtown in Jasper where he ran a coin laundry. Heavily involved in the community during his earlier years, John was in the Jasper Volunteer Fire Department and the local Kinsmen club. In 1973, John purchases farm land in Dunster, BC and over the years spent more time there and eventually devoted his remaining working years raising cattle. An avid car fan, John enjoyed his vehicles and despite a few wrecks throughout his faster, younger years, he survived so that in his later year he could enjoy his time at the farm, family visits to Maui and traveling to warm locations with his RV during the winter.

John is survived by his wife Gabrielle (Googs) of Jasper; his four children Sam and his wife Shelley and daughter Ainsley of Jasper, Nicole and her husband Rupert of Jasper, Tamara and her husband Steve and children Joshua and Isabel of Maui, and Michael and his wife Alison of Calgary and children Jena, Myles & Dylan. Also, his siblings George (Tony), Leo (Anne), and Barb (Wayne) and predeceased by his sister Mariea (Pat).
