Nello Salvador Camarta passed away on September 16th at the Edson Nursing Home. He was 104 years old. Nello was born on May 18th, 1913 in Eveleth, Minnesota to John and Ester Camarta. When Nello was 11 months old his parents moved to Canada and settled on a homestead in the Shining Bank area. Nello had three brothers, Jim, Victor and Robert, and three sisters, Mary, Josephine and Lena. Nello spent his entire life farming and logging in the Shining Bank area. He was still working hard on his sawmill well into his 90’s. Many a home, granary and shed was built with Nello’s lumber over the years. Nello loved baseball. He was a catcher in his hey days – and one heck of a good hitter. He followed professional baseball very closely and could remember every detail of World Series games from long ago. His favourite team was the Toronto Blue Jays. He hated the Yankees! Nello never travelled much – but when he did he travelled far. He twice visited his son and family in London, England. Together they visited Italy – the original home to Nello’s parents. Nello was fluent in Italian and really enjoyed visiting his long-lost relatives. He also marveled at the Coliseum and other ancient sites in Rome. These overseas trips were a highlight of his life. He talked about them for years. Nello married Elizabeth Neale in 1952. Together they had one son, Neil, and two daughters, Debbie (Tarjan) and Tania (Delling). Debbie passed away in 2006. Nello later married Thalia Campbell. Nello is survived by his children Neil and Tania, his brother Robert, his sister Lena, five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
